Jay's Job Search is finally over!

Hi everyone!

I'm absolutely elated as the job search is finally over!! I will be the new Music/Choir Teacher at Chappelow K-8 Arts and Literacy "Magnet" School in Evans, Colorado, near Greeley, starting in August. Yay!!!!!!

After 19 specific teaching positions applied for and 7 interviews over the past three months, I was offered the position this morning from the 7th interview, which was last Monday. I'm so thankful for this opportunity, especially at a school that is a magnet school for music. Thank you for all of your prayers. This has been a great week with this news and Penny's adoption finalization. Have a great day!

Jay :-)

Family!!

Oh, Happy Day! I would like to now officially introduce you to Penpohn "Penny" C. Regan!! We had a great day in Denver at the Courthouse and we have now officially adopted Penny. It's great to share some pictures with you. The Lord has blessed us already with some great bonding time. We have already felt like a family, but it is nice to now know that it is official and can't be changed or reversed. Yahooooo!!

Can't Believe that's she's almost officially a Regan!

We're so excited that our daughter will officially become a part of our family and an American citizen next week. We are very fortunate that the process has been really smooth for us thanks to our wonderful Colorado adoption agency, Adoption Alliance. They did our homestudy for us and have taken care of all of the paper work for finalizing in the state court, located in Denver. So, next Tuesday, the 23rd we'll get to go to court to make it official. And then we'll be allowed to start showing photos of our daughter. I have to say that she is quite the beauty. And that's not bragging, since she doesn't have my genes. She's beautiful on the inside, too. Yesterday she came up to Jay with a $5 bill and said, "Daddy, this is for you." Later she told me, "Daddy is always driving me everywhere and he has to pay a lot of money for gas. So, I want to share my $5 with him." This girl has a very generous heart! How is it that we are so blessed? After all, she tells stories of girls at the orphanage who would always steal from others. And, yet, our daughter has a heart of gold. We are truly blessed!

Our First Getaway Alone

Well, after six months together as a family Jay and I felt it was time that we could attempt our first getaway alone. We decided to take a little weekend trip for our anniversary. We let Penny stay with her grandparents. We did get some drama complete with tears. But, she finally realized that we were serious and she decided to go along with the plan. Now she's been having so much fun that when she calls she doesn't want to talk too long. Dad feels a little hurt that she hasn't wanted to talk to him at all. But, we're just so glad that she's feeling so comfortable at his parents' house. Jay and I took a trip to southern Colorado, staying in Pueblo. Penny went with Grandpa and Grandma yesterday to the Denver Aquarium. Afterwards they stopped at the Lao Market. Penny spent a long time picking out some Thai music CD's/DVD's. She was very excited to use her own money from her birthday, weekend dog-sitting job and allowance to purchase them. She's really starting to understand more about money and taking a delight in using her pennies wisely.

Lately, she's also decided on her own that it's not such a bad idea to do household chores as I've promised to give her some money for the various tasks. I've started out small, since I knew that at first she had no concept about the value of American money and hadn't learned about personal responsibility, yet. But, now that she's learning and showing me more responsibility, I'm starting to increase the amount. I've never done this before, so I don't know if it's the best way or not. But, it seems to be working for us. I wanted her to learn the value of being rewarded for her work. So, I made a calendar that I had her help me out with by writing all of the chores and the title "Responsibility and Rewards" chart at the top in Thai. Then I give her stickers for each of the tasks that we're hoping that she'll do. I don't push them. Instead, I'm giving her a choice. After all, at the Girls' Home she had no choice. When she first got to America she had the fantasy that her parents would do everything for her and wait on her hand and foot and give her everything she wanted immediately. Now she's coming to realize how we have to work hard for what we have and that we need to save and pay bills. She's beginning to notice what it takes to be personally responsible. For the first time these past couple of weeks she has started to elect to set her alarm clock on her own, too. At first she refused. It must have brought back too many memories of being awakened by a whistle at 5 a.m. every morning. The poor girl didn't even know how to tell time when she first came to us. So much for a thirteen year old (now fourteen) to learn. But, she's learning well. We're blessed to have such a bright young woman as our daughter.

Hate that our Posts are so Boring

Yes, it's a bummer that we can't post pictures. But, we don't want to jeopardize any Thai adoptions, in particular our own. So, we're being careful to follow all of the rules. We've had so many fun events lately, with Penny's graduation, visiting cousins and grandparents and now her first-ever birthday party. But, alas, we are not to post any photos of her. So, those will have to come later. And I'm thinking that I still may reserve them for our private blog. I'll keep you posted on that.

Her birthday was really special. Her 14th birthday was the very first one she ever celebrated. I asked her if they did anything at the Girls' Home for b-days, such as a song or special food. She said, "No". Maybe they figure it's too painful for kids to remember their b-day, since they are without families. Well, I decided that this one ought to be special. And for Penny, what makes anything special is having lots of people involved. She is such a social, outgoing extrovert. So, we invited about 30 people of which about 25 attended. We had 16 kids from the ages of 2-15. We played a game with water balloons outside and part of a game of croquet before a rain storm moved in. Then we ate pizza before opening gifts. She requested a strawberry ice cream cake, as she doesn't like regular cake. Note to self: Noisemakers and teenagers are a deadly combination! The day ended with the teens chasing each other all over in and out of the house playing a hide-and-seek game with boys vs. girls until finally Jay had to ask them not to remove screens from the windows. One thoughtful teen boy said, "This is why most people don't have parties at their homes." It was both exhausting and exhilarating. I'm just glad that our home is one where the teens like to stay and hang out. The party started at 4 and kids still hated leaving at 7:30 pm.

Well, since then she's kind of having an emotional low after the high of the party. She told me the day after the party, "Mom, I want to have 25 people living in our house." Oh boy! My reaction was, "I wonder how we'll feed that many people." I also reminded her of the fact that we only have one shower/bath tub. Yesterday she had a lot of fun as our neighborhood had a picnic at the neighborhood pool. We're blessed to have several really kind, friendly wonderful neighbors. They are all helping to make Penny feel welcomed. We met another neighbor for the first time last night who moved to this country from Taiwan 20 years ago. She asked Penny which she liked better right now, Thailand or America. Of course, Penny answered, "Thailand". But, when the woman asked her, "Why?" Penny couldn't really give her an answer. I loved it, as "Why?" is Penny's favorite response to everything we tell her. It was so funny to see someone else asking her, "Why?" and stumping her. This wise woman who has already raised two young people of her own told me that if we can understand her during this emotionally tumultuous time of her life that we'll end up later being very, very close.

We're thankful, too, that Jay has had several job interviews and calls for more this week. So, we're waiting in anticipation, wondering which job the Lord will provide. Penny has requested that she get a pet once we know what Dad's job status will be for the Fall. So, she's getting impatient for Daddy to find a job so that she can get a cat. She already started looking at pictures online from our local animal shelter. She has her eyes set on a cute little mix tabby cat named Montana.
