World Heritage

I'm very excited about a new venture that I'm jumping into. For the last few weeks I've been thinking about how I wish that Penny would be able to meet more international exchange students, perhaps even from Thailand. Next year she will start high school. So, I was wondering to myself, "I wonder if there will be any exchange students there. I wonder who I could contact to find out. Or I wonder how I'd go about making sure they could bring some exchange students over." Well, turns out that I may end up being the answer to that. You see, I happened to be on Craig's List the other day to post something. While on there, I decided to look up their part-time jobs, on a whim. I already have one part-time job. But, between Jay and my three part-time jobs, it doesn't seem to be enough for us to make ends meet. So, I thought, "I'm curious to see if there'd be any extra thing out there that I could do." So with much skepticism I took a look and lo and behold there was a position posted that sounded like a match made in heaven. I immediately revised and sent in my resume. That night while I was at church a woman called and left a message from the World Heritage Student Exchange Program. It wouldn't necessarily pay a lot, but I called her back to say, "Yes! that I'd love to apply as an area representative." My job would be to recruit families from the community to host the high school exchange students. She was very excited about my background. Since I taught ESL to internationals in Chicago, lived in Japan for six and a half years and have an adopted daughter from Thailand, I should be able to help smooth the transition for students, especially from Asian countries. I guess they reimburse you per student you are able to match up with a host family. So, the more, the merrier! Then I'd be the one responsible for orienting the families and the students, checking in with them periodically, and planning a few activities for them. Sounds like a lot of fun! I can't wait to see how this all plays out.

Wow, what a great opportunity for you! Isn't it funny how things we are looking for sometimes land in our lap like that? Good for you! And great for Penny to meet more kids from Asia and elsewhere. I was thinking when Ruby is older it might be fun to host a girl from Thailand here.
